New report: Can we improve ACP legislation consistency?

We've released a new report, Australian advance care planning laws: Can we improve consistency? The report reviews relevant ACP legislation across Australia and examines both the consistencies and variation in terminology, scope, formalities, obligations and recognition. In highlighting the areas of difference and the confusion this creates, the report makes a strong case for reform of ACP laws across Australia, providing evidence to inform future ACP legislation and policy. The report was made possible through our collaboration with the University of Melbourne.

New report: ACP obligations of health professionals in Australia

We've launched a report detailing the advance care planning obligations of various registered and unregistered health professionals across Australia. The report, Obligations of Australian health practitioners in relation to advance care planning, uncovers inconsistencies in obligations, protections and exceptions within Australian advance care planning legislation, relevant health profession codes of conduct and/or professional standards. ACPA is working with health practitioner organisations to incorporate important advance care planning capabilities into codes and standards.

Temporary changes to ACP legislation in QLD

Advance Care Planning Australia welcomes news that Queensland has made temporary changes to the Powers of Attorney Act 1998 to allow remote document witnessing during the COVID-19 crisis via video. Physical distancing has made it increasingly difficult for people to meet existing requirements for witnessing wills, Enduring Power of Attorney and Advance Health Directive forms. These legislative changes have been passed to help alleviate these challenges and will expire on 31 December 2020.

Meet Sue

This month we profile Sue, one on our newer volunteer community ambassador recruits, who helps operate our National Advisory Service.

Before joining ACPA, Sue enjoyed an impressive and varied career in nursing, midwifery and health management.  Her high-level interpersonal skills were further developed though her experience as a professional coach. These skills have proved most valuable in Sue's sensitive handling of complex queries from callers seeking personal advice on advance care planning.

"My ability to listen carefully has proved to be most valuable, as well as my ability to ask probing questions to ensure that I understand what the customer is asking and what their understanding of ACP is."
