Making the Green Deal’s renovation wave a reality

The European Commission announced a list of initiatives to help meet its net-zero emissions target by 2050. This includes a building “renovation wave.” RAP outlines three key actions to boost the project’s chances for success — and bring the EU back on track with energy efficiency in buildings. By working together, the European institutions and Member States can deliver numerous benefits to citizens and ensure the Green Deal works for all Europeans.

   
   

ELECTRIC VEHICLES

Integrating electric vehicles into Turkey’s distribution grids

Turkey expects to have over 1 million EVs on the roads by 2030. Despite the current level of only 1,000 vehicles, the distribution grids are well prepared for this dramatic rise. Shura Energy Transition Center — in collaboration with RAP and EPRA Engineering, Procurement, Research and Analysis — released the first in-depth study of Turkey’s potential to integrate EVs into the power system. The authors conclude that the grids can accommodate up to 2.5 million EVs at little additional cost.

ENERGY EQUITY

Energy poverty and its mitigation in the EU

Energy poverty affects at least 50 million people in the European Union. RAP is part of a new project, SocialWatt, funded by the European Union’s Horizon 2020 programme, that is working to alleviate this burden. Together the project consortium will provide decision-making tools for utilities and energy suppliers to develop innovative schemes to reduce energy poverty. SocialWatt’s first major study, led by RAP, explores the state of energy poverty and mitigation efforts in 11 EU countries.

POWER MARKETS

Europe’s new energy market design

The Energy Regulators Regional Association invited RAP’s Zsuzsanna Pató to speak about the components of the Clean Energy for All Europeans legislation and their implications for energy market design. The association has now shared Pató’s recommendations for improving markets and regionalisation, integrating demand-side resources and accommodating active consumers.

Italy has set ambitious targets for increasing the use of renewable energy and committed to closing all coal plants by 2025.
