REGULATION

Electric Cost Allocation for a New Era

Cost allocation, one of the fundamental steps in the utility regulatory process, has been informed for decades by foundational books and historical best practices. But legacy methods from the 20th century are ill-suited to the power sector of the 21st century, characterized by variable renewable energy, distributed resources and smart new technologies. RAP’s new manual, Electric Cost Allocation for a New Era, charts a comprehensive new path on cost allocation, incorporating this transformation. In the first of a series of blog posts, authors Jim Lazar, Paul Chernick, William Marcus and manual editor Mark LeBel explain what’s behind this updated approach to guaranteeing a fair, clean and efficient power system.

GLOBAL INSIGHTS

Modeling the EV Transition in Turkey

With just 1,000 electric vehicles on its roads so far, Turkey has barely started down the path to a cleaner transportation future. But a new report suggests that the country’s power system can be well prepared for this future. Dr. Julia Hildermeier and Christos Kolokathis collaborated with Turkey’s SHURA Energy Transition Center to model how high numbers of EVs — up to 2.5 million by 2030 — can be successfully integrated into the Turkish distribution grid.
