Learning from the Czech Republic on using EU ETS revenues

How we spend our money is one of the most important decisions in life. This is especially true for the carbon pricing debate, and the impact of these decisions is immense. Investing revenues from the EU Emissions Trading System in effective energy efficiency programmes can save seven to nine times more carbon than the price alone. Louise Sunderland demonstrates this value in a case study of the Czech Republic’s fruitful carbon revenue recycling programme.

The UK’s August 9 blackout: Why did it happen and what can we learn?

As the energy mix and characteristics of today’s electricity network change, it is critical that operation and regulation of our power system also keep pace. The outages in the UK on August 9 provide an ideal learning opportunity. Philip Baker unpacks the exceptional events leading up to the supply failure, provides insight into the issues that need attention, and highlights the role of distributed generation and its growing potential to enhance grid resilience.

ENERGY EFFICIENCY

Potential impact of tax measures on energy savings claimed under Article 7 EED

When EU Member States report on energy savings obligations under Article 7 Energy Efficiency Directive, they often include antiquated energy and carbon tax measures. Dr. Jan Rosenow and Stefan Scheuer dig deeper into this practice and examine the safeguards built into the revised directive. Closing taxation loopholes in Article 7 can ensure that tax measures deliver additional energy savings to help meet the EU’s 2020 and 2030 energy savings targets and more ambitious greenhouse gas reduction goals.
