Your Weekly Leadership HVA (High Value Activity)

Hello Lifelong Learner ...

Here's the next in our series of weekly managerial TIPS (Techniques, Insights, and Practical Solutions) to help you better engage your team in the activities that lead to higher performance.

CORE Bites #5: When you care about your people, you undoubtedly also care about their success. As a result, you’ve probably asked yourself (many times) "How can I take my employees to the next level?" or “Where are the best learning opportunities to stimulate the most growth?” or “What can I do that will facilitate stretch without making my team feel overwhelmed?” While there are many ways to embrace continuous learning, one of the most effective is to establish short-term learning goals. Setting short-term learning goals for employees (weekly for new employees; monthly for more seasoned employees) can provide invaluable benefits to your organization in the long run. Bite-size learning goals are easily managed, reduce the risk of overwhelming the employee, and offer you a powerful reinforcement opportunity when the learning is completed successfully. These type of goals also help to raise the overall bench strength of the organization as employees individually — and as a group — continue to learn and grow as professionals.

HVA Action Step: Start with a piece of paper and draw three columns and as many rows as you have employees (an electronic spreadsheet will work here as well). The column headers are Employee Name, Depth Learning, and Breadth Learning. List your employees in the designated column and identify one new 'depth' growth area (learning specific to his/her job responsibilities) and one new 'breadth' growth area that is outside of the employee's specific job responsibilities but will benefit him/her in the long-term (e.g., improve relationships, enhance team work, better communication, etc.). Each plan should incorporate opportunities where employees can learn, contribute, and step outside of their comfort zones.

I'd love to hear how this HVA works for you!

Have a brilliant day ... and enjoy the journey!
