Putting together a successful social media strategy for your business is not as easy as hiring a millennial to “create some posts on our Facebook page every so often because they understand that stuff”. There’s a lot more to it than that. And if you’re not taking advantage of all that social media has to offer, your business could be missing out on one of the most effective ways to reach a huge audience of consumers. 

According to Statista, in 2018 there were over to 240 million social network users in the United States, and that number is expected to continue to increase over the next few years. And the average American has up to 7 different social media accounts they follow. Social media has become a part of a basic everyday routine for most people, checking their accounts at least once a day.


What are users looking for from social media? A variety of  things! Communicating and photo sharing with family and friends, shopping and brand research, finding things to do, checking the news, watching videos and the list goes on and on. And while younger adults make up most users, the usage among older adults has grown year-over-year as they embrace digital in all areas of their lives.

Next, set up business accounts on the various sites making sure that your name and branding is consistent across the various profiles.Once you’re ready to start posting, make sure you create engaging posts with quality photos or videos. Write interesting copy and compelling captions. Reach more people using relevant hashtags. And finally, once people start engaging with your posts, interact with your audience by responding to messages, comments,likes and shares.


Once you have started posting and engaging, you can now start learning how to use social analytics and reporting to see if your social media activity is moving the needle for your business whether your goal is brand awareness,sales, website traffic or some other metric. There are numerous statistics and data reports available within the social media platforms.

New Year's Soup
New Year's Soup

Ingredients:

1 tbsp extra-virgin olive oil 

2 cloves garlic, crushed

1 small onion, chopped

2 carrots, peeled and sliced

3 leaves collard greens, coarsely chopped

1 (14.5 oz) can vegetable broth


1 (15 oz) can black-eyed peas, rinsed &  drained

1/2 cup quinoa

1 cup water

1 tbsp cider vinegar, or to taste

salt and ground black pepper to taste

Directions:

  1. Heat olive oil in a soup pot over medium heat; cook and stir garlic until it begins to brown, about 3 minutes. Add onion and carrots. Cook and stir until carrots begin to brown and onion becomes translucent, 7 to 8 minutes. Cook and stir collard greens into onion mixture until wilted, about 5 minutes.
  2. Pour vegetable broth and black-eyed peas into vegetables, bring to a boil, and reduce heat to low. Cover and simmer soup until vegetables are softened, 20 to 25 minutes.
  3. While soup is simmering, mix quinoa and water in a saucepan, bring to a boil, and reduce heat to low. Cover and simmer until the water has absorbed into the quinoa, about 10 minutes. Stir cooked quinoa into soup and simmer until collard greens are tender, about 10 more minutes. Stir cider vinegar into soup to taste and season with salt and black pepper.
