"Inclusion is not a matter of political correctness. It is the key to growth." - Jesse Jackson

Boundaries of Inclusion

In times of stress, disorientation and emotional intensity, our challenge is to connect. All teachers believe in transforming fear into understanding, turning understanding into hope, and growing hope into positive action. The antidote to distrust of information which does not square with one's closely held beliefs, is first-hand experience. In this way, travel is a positive trick of the mind, insisting that we make sense of other people and places in the present moment.

Learning that Lasts

Consider Karla, the Honduran refugee bride who married her beloved Hernandez at the Tijuana Border wall before surrendering themselves for asylum. Upon a daunting backdrop of national division---The Wall---student documentarian Lily Xie captured this couple's courageous declaration of unity and love. Lily's film helped raise the funds to support Karla for 9 months as she was detained, denied asylum, deported back to Honduras, and ultimately reunited with Hernandez in Mexico.

Vietnam, Summer 2020

Breathtaking powdered-sugar sandy beaches, limestone green island bays, lively Mekong River Delta culture, verdant jungle and terraced hilltribe farms. Vietnam is a glorious landscape of natural beauty unlike anywhere on Earth. Decades of normalized relations between the United States and Vietnam invite us to explore these national treasures with ease. Our synthesis of historical analysis, conscious tourism and survivor testimony provide a framework for applying Vietnam’s lessons – the missed opportunities for peace --- upon the geopolitical conflicts of today.
